In My Head is All I´ve Got

with 4 comments

Okay, so I don´t like vegetables, which is a bit sad for a man of my years and breeding - but I can´t help it. They make me gag. I can eat spinach and parsnip and some others, but when I get that veggie taste in my mouth my stomach turns and I can feel the bile rise. People say it´s all in my head - well I know that. The whole world is in my head - IN MY HEAD IS ALL I´VE GOT.

Like it being only in my head makes is less real. The only reality I encounter is via my head. The only things I see, hear, smell, taste or touch is through the filter of my head.

Every little thing I experience is a representation of a perceived reality created by the ragtag shambles of bits of pieces that together operate under the title of “my head”.I am my head.

This is not intended as a defence of a grown man not eating his greens. I do have a story cooked up about being mentally scarred by tragic school dinners, but really, it is all just in my head.

  1. Well if you ever visit me, I will make you a nice, thick vegetable broth with dumplings and lots of coriander.

I have to confess . . . I’ve used “it’s all in your head” on my own children. It never goes down well.

  2. That sounds very nice EP, I like vegetable soup - not the same as coming across a big chunk of brocolli in your mouth - urghhh!

When we say things are “in your head” we mean as opposed to being out there independent of heads - or, out there in lots of other heads too. It shouldn´t be “only in your head”, it should be “only in YOUR head” - at least then you have some control over it and can change things - if it´s head-independent, there´s nothing you can do.

  3. Yes, “it’s all in your head” is really a very silly throwaway comment to make. It has a dismissive effect . . . ridiculing even. And it’s lazy.

I will remember this the next time I’m tempted to say it to my children.

  4. EP, it is dismissive, as if something being “in your head” was somehow less real to that person - but it´s also true, if it is just in your head, you should really be able to deal with it.
